Simcere gets $75 million up front, while Roche gains development, manufacturing, and commercialization rights.

Editor’s Take: This antibody may offer a differentiated therapeutic approach, including in B-cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.
Simcere Zaiming, a Simcere Pharmaceutical Group subsidiary, entered an exclusive, global licensing agreement with Roche for the tri-specific antibody SIM0660. The partnership covers development and commercialization of SIM0660, which has therapeutic potential in B-cell-mediated diseases.
Simcere Zaiming developed SIM0660 using T-cell engager poly-specific antibody technology. As such, SIM0660 combines a CD3-engaging arm with binding domains that target the B-cell antigens CD79a and CD19.
The design of this mechanism, ideally, induces potent T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity, while limiting cytokine release. In other words, SIM0660 potentially provides broad coverage across B-cell-mediated diseases. It may also offer a differentiated therapeutic approach for patients who were previously treated with CD20- or CD19-directed therapies.
In addition, Simcere Zaiming says SIM0660 holds therapeutic potential for B-cell-mediated autoimmune diseases. Here, targeted depletion of pathogenic B cells may provide a clinical benefit.
“Simcere Zaiming is committed to develop highly innovative T-cell engagers through our proprietary platform,” Chairman and CEO Renhong Tang said. “We are pleased to collaborate with Roche to accelerate the clinical development of SIM0660. Through our synergistic innovation, we hope to benefit global patients soon.”
“SIM0660 represents a potential advancement for patients with B-cell-mediated diseases,” Roche Head of Corporate Business Development Boris Zaïtra said. “This agreement reflects our commitment to partnering with innovative companies to advance and deliver new therapeutic options for patients.”
All told, Simcere Zaiming may eventually receive $1.53 billion in total payments. The company is getting $75 million up front. In exchange, Roche acquires exclusive global rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialize SIM0660.
Simcere Zaiming is further eligible for tiered royalties on future net sales. Parent company Simcere Pharmaceutical Group has completed six out-licensing deals to date, potentially bringing total considerations to over $6 billion.
